What Else Is Out There? A Quick Guide to ADAS Features

A plain-English map of common, advanced and emerging driver-assistance features.

By now, you’ve probably made peace with lane keeping, smart cruise, and AEB.

But those are just the start.

Modern cars can be packed with all sorts of clever systems – some helpful, some confusing, and some you might not even know are switched on.

This chapter is your plain-English guide to the most common features. You don’t have to memorise it – just skim through and see what sounds familiar.

Core ADAS Features (You Might Already Have)

  • Lane-Keeping Assistance (LKA) May provide a brief steering or braking correction near a detected lane boundary.

  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW) Beeps or vibrates the wheel if you start crossing a line without indicating.

  • Lane-Following or Lane-Centring Assistance Provides ongoing steering support to help remain near the centre of a detected lane while operating conditions are met.

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Maintains a set speed when the path is clear and adjusts speed in response to a detected vehicle ahead. The driver must supervise the following gap.

  • Automatic or autonomous emergency braking (AEB) may warn and apply braking when it detects a possible collision and the driver has not responded sufficiently. It is a collision-mitigation aid, not a guaranteed stop.

  • Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) Warns you when there’s a car in your blind spot – often with a light in the mirror.

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) Warns of specified traffic approaching from the side while reversing. It does not necessarily brake.

  • Traffic-Sign Recognition (TSR) Attempts to identify selected signs and display information. It can miss or misread signs, and the driver remains responsible for obeying the applicable limit.

  • Driver Monitoring or Attention Warning Uses camera, steering or other information to look for behaviours associated with inattention or fatigue. It cannot determine whether a person is fit to drive.

  • Rear Automatic Braking May apply braking for certain detected reversing hazards within defined conditions; target coverage varies.

  • Advanced & Fancy Stuff (Often in Higher-End Cars)

  • LiDAR-Based Detection Uses reflected laser light to estimate distance and build spatial information. Its strengths and limitations differ from radar and cameras.

  • Night Vision Uses thermal or near-infrared imaging to display or highlight some people, animals or objects in darkness. Detection is not guaranteed.

  • Automatic Lane-Change Assistance On equipped vehicles and suitable roads, may assist with a lane change after the driver requests or confirms it. The driver obligations depend on the exact system.

  • Highway Driving Assistance May combine speed and lane-centring support, sometimes with map information. A Level 2 system still requires continuous driver supervision.

  • 360-Degree Camera View Bird’s eye camera system that helps you see around the car when parking or manoeuvring.

  • Parking Assistance May provide steering support or, on some vehicles, control additional movements. The driver must supervise the surroundings and understand who controls braking.

  • Intersection AEB Warns or brakes if you’re about to cross paths with another vehicle, like turning across traffic.

  • Traffic Jam Assist Low-speed combination of lane centring and adaptive cruise to handle stop-start congestion.

  • Emergency Lane-Keeping May provide a stronger intervention when the system detects a risk of leaving the road or colliding with adjacent traffic. Capability varies substantially.

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Braking May apply braking for specified crossing traffic while reversing. It does not detect every road user or approach angle.

How to Look After an ADAS Car

Do:

  • Keep the accessible sensor viewing areas identified in the owner’s manual clean using the recommended method.

  • After windscreen, bumper, collision, steering or suspension work, ask what the current manufacturer procedure required and request records for any inspection, scan, calibration or verification that was completed.

  • Become familiar with lane and cruise assistance during normal driving; do not deliberately trigger emergency or boundary interventions.

Don’t:

  • Ignore ADAS warning lights – even if everything feels fine.

  • Do not place accessories where they obstruct a camera, driver-monitoring sensor or other identified sensor area. Use vehicle-compatible mounting positions.

  • Before fitting a bullbar, lift kit, wrap or other accessory, confirm compatibility and any inspection, configuration or calibration requirements.

  • Assume the system always knows better than you – it’s backup, not autopilot.

Keep a Cheat Sheet

Before your next service or repair, jot these down:

  • Any ADAS-related warning lights you’ve seen

  • What the car was doing when they appeared

  • Any recent repairs, bumps, or strange weather

  • A list of systems that don’t feel quite right

It’s like giving your mechanic a head start – and you avoid the “couldn’t replicate fault” line.
