Buying a Car with ADAS – What to Look For

A practical new-and-used vehicle checklist that looks beyond feature names and sales claims.

So far, this book has been about helping you make peace with the ADAS tech already living in your car.

But maybe you’re reading this because you’ve just bought a new vehicle – or you’re about to.

Maybe you’re replacing the old family car. Maybe you’re finally upgrading from something that just squeaked through its last roadworthy check. Or maybe you’ve realised your next car is going to have all this lane-keeping, auto-braking, radar-reading gear whether you like it or not.

And here’s the thing:

If you’re going to drive with this tech, you may as well pick a car that does it well.

ADAS performance and usability vary. The best choice is the system whose controls, limitations and behaviour you understand and can use safely.

This chapter is your plain-English guide to buying smart, whether you’re heading to a dealer tomorrow or just doing your homework for the future.

Buying a New Car with ADAS – What to Look For

Use this checklist to compare systems and identify questions requiring evidence rather than accepting a sales demonstration at face value.

  • Lane Assistance You Understand

  • Identify whether the vehicle has warning-only, lane-keeping or lane-centring functions and try normal operation on a suitable road.

  • Check whether permitted settings make the feedback comfortable without obscuring important warnings.

  • Adaptive Cruise with Stop & Go

  • Stop-and-go capability may be useful in traffic if the system is designed for it and the driver understands how it resumes and cancels.

  • Confirm whether it can stop, how long it remains active and whether the driver must press a control to resume.

  • A minimum operating speed is a design characteristic, not proof that a system is obsolete or unsafe.

  • Sensor Coverage and Limitations

  • Camera and radar can complement one another, but the presence of both does not guarantee superior performance in every situation.

  • Ask which functions use each sensor and what conditions can limit them.

  • Confirm the specified target types and operating range rather than assuming every system detects cyclists, pedestrians or turning vehicles.

Clear, Simple Dashboard Controls

Can you identify and adjust the feature while parked, and cancel it promptly while driving?

Are the alerts easy to read, or buried in sub-menus?

Complex controls are not automatically unsafe, but they may affect whether the vehicle suits you.

A Service Department That Knows ADAS

This is the big question to ask the salesperson:

“What does the manufacturer require after windscreen, bumper, sensor, steering or suspension work, and who completes it?”

A useful answer explains how the requirement is identified, whether work is performed in-house or referred, and what records are supplied.

Treat vague promises that everything calibrates automatically as a reason to ask for the written procedure and evidence.

A good after-sales department is your safety net when something goes wrong.

  • What to Watch Out For

  • Lane assist that feels like it’s wrestling the wheel

  • Cruise control that panics on hills or corners

  • Features whose defined operating range does not suit the roads and traffic you commonly use

  • Salespeople who gloss over the tech like it’s magic

  • Controls you cannot understand or cancel confidently after a proper demonstration

Buying a Used Car with ADAS – What to Watch For

Second-hand cars with driver-assist tech can be a bargain or a headache in disguise. Here’s how to spot the difference.

Check Sensor Locations

  • Most ADAS features rely on cameras and radar tucked behind:

  • The rear-view mirror (camera)

  • The front grille or lower bumper (radar and LiDAR)

  • Rear bumper corners (blind spot sensors)

  • Look for damage, non-standard parts, poor refinishing, loose trim or accessories around these areas. These observations may indicate:

  • Prior damage

  • Poor repairs

  • A need for more detailed inspection—not proof that a sensor is misaligned

Dashboard Warnings Require Investigation

  • Turn the ignition on and wait a few seconds. You’re looking for:

  • Warning lights related to lane assist, AEB, or radar

  • Systems that fail to initialise properly

  • Messages like “Front Radar Unavailable” or “Camera Blocked”

  • If an ADAS warning remains, pause the purchase until a competent inspection explains it and provides a realistic repair scope and cost.

Demonstrate Normal Features—Never Emergency Interventions

  • Ask the seller to demonstrate:

  • Lane-assistance status and ordinary steering support on a suitable, clearly marked road

  • Adaptive-cruise controls and ordinary response to traffic, without relying on the displayed gap as proof of safety

  • Blind-spot indicator self-check or a safe manufacturer-approved demonstration; do not stage a close pass

  • A feature that “never worked” may involve settings, operating conditions, damage or a fault—not merely a fuse.

Ask These Two Questions

Has the windscreen ever been replaced? If yes, ask whether the correct glass and any required camera procedure were documented.

Has the front or rear bumper ever been repaired? If yes, ask how sensors, brackets, refinishing limits and any required calibration or verification were handled.

Prior work is not automatically a dealbreaker. Verify the repair evidence and price any unresolved inspection, diagnosis or calibration before buying.

Final Thoughts

Your car isn’t out to get you. It’s not trying to take over.

Modern vehicles use cameras, radar and other sensors to add information and limited assistance; they do not replace mirrors, observation or judgement.

Yes, it beeps. Yes, it sometimes grabs the wheel. Yes, it has a few quirks – just like every human co-driver you’ve ever had.

Once you understand the controls and limits, suitable assistance can make some journeys feel smoother and less demanding.

When assistance activates, stay calm, keep control and respond to the actual road situation.

Just remember: you’re still the boss.

ADAS is a collection of limited tools. Use the right one in the right conditions, and remain the driver.
