When ADAS Fails – Act Fast, Stay Safe

What to record, inspect and ask for when a warning, collision, repair or changed behaviour affects ADAS.

You’re driving home, feeling pretty good about this whole idea of not fighting your car. Then suddenly:

Beep.

Red light on the dash.

Steering wheel pulls weird.

Or maybe you reverse out of a tight parking spot and bump a pole at 5 km/h. Barely a scratch. Nothing to worry about, right?

Well… maybe not.

Modern repairs can affect equipment hidden behind glass, badges, grilles, mirrors and bumpers. Even apparently minor damage warrants checking the vehicle and repair information rather than guessing.

This chapter is all about what to do next – and why it matters to fix it fast.

The Hidden Risk of “It’ll Buff Out”

Modern cars often hide cameras, radar, LiDAR, and sensors behind panels, bumpers, grilles, and windscreens.

So, when someone says:

“It’s just a small ding. Don’t worry about it,”

there may also be a sensor, bracket, wiring or mounting area behind the damaged surface.

An impact can damage or move a component, but appearance alone cannot establish whether calibration changed. New warnings or altered behaviour should be inspected systematically.

  • A damaged, obstructed, faulty or incorrectly referenced ADAS system may contribute to:

  • False alarms when nothing is there

  • No warning when something is there

  • Unnecessary emergency braking

  • Lane keeping that drifts or overcorrects

  • Reduced or unpredictable assistance performance

Recording and Reporting an Incident

Follow the road rules, insurance conditions and incident-reporting requirements that apply where the event occurred.

When safe, obtain the required details and preserve useful evidence rather than deciding at the roadside that damage is insignificant.

That means:

  • Exchange the details required by applicable law and your insurer; requirements vary by jurisdiction and incident

  • Take photographs safely where permitted, without obstructing traffic or placing yourself at risk

  • Write down what happened, in case symptoms show up later

Good records can help if damage or symptoms become apparent later. Contact your insurer or obtain legal advice when you are unsure of an obligation.

Events That Should Prompt a Procedure Check

When Inspection or Calibration May Be Required

  • A sensor, windscreen, bumper, grille, mirror or mounting area has been removed, replaced, repaired or disturbed

  • A relevant warning or service message is present

  • Assistance behaviour changed after an impact, repair, alignment or suspension work

  • A feature is repeatedly unavailable or behaves abnormally in suitable conditions

Calibration establishes specified sensor references using the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure. It cannot compensate for damaged brackets, incorrect parts, unsuitable vehicle geometry or unresolved faults.

Incorrect sensor references can affect warnings or interventions, but similar symptoms can also result from obstruction, damage, software, wiring, geometry or another fault.

What to Tell the Dealer, Mechanic, or Panel Shop

Not everyone in the trade is up to speed with how ADAS works.

So, help them help you.

Use clear language:

“I’ve noticed lane assist feels different after the bump.”

“My LKA light came on after the windscreen was replaced.”

“It used to centre well. Now it feels like it’s hunting for the lane.”

If a passenger can do so without distracting the driver, safely captured dashcam footage or notes made after stopping may help. Never use a handheld phone while driving or ask a passenger to create a risky demonstration.

What to Observe Before You Take It In

  • Before you book a service or repair, take note of:

  • When the issue started (for example, after a specific bump, storm, or repair)

  • What warning lights appeared, and whether they disappeared

  • Any unusual behaviour – steering, braking, cruise control, beeping

  • Weather and road conditions when it happened

  • Any recent work done (tyres, windscreens, panel repair)

This checklist makes you look switched on and helps the technician diagnose faster.

What You Can Check Safely

Do not road-test a suspected safety fault by trying to reproduce an intervention. When safely parked:

  • Record the exact message, date, location, weather and road conditions.

  • Inspect only the accessible sensor areas identified in the owner’s manual.

  • Clean ordinary contamination using the manufacturer’s instructions; do not adjust a sensor or remove trim.

  • Note whether the change followed a windscreen, bumper, tyre, steering, suspension or collision repair.

  • Do not assume a straight road proves correct calibration.

  • Do not deliberately provoke steering or braking assistance.

  • A normal following gap displayed by ACC does not verify emergency performance.

  • Arrange inspection promptly if behaviour is repeated, severe or accompanied by warnings.

Important: A normal road test cannot prove the full performance of AEB or another emergency function. Never create a hazard to test one. Have suspected faults assessed using the appropriate manufacturer information, diagnostic process and controlled equipment.
