Automated driving: what changes for the driver?

Assistance and automation are different

SAE driving-automation levels describe who performs the driving task and fallback—not how futuristic a vehicle feels. At Levels 0–2, the human driver remains responsible for supervising the road and driving even when steering and speed assistance operate together.

At Level 3, an automated driving system may perform the complete driving task within a limited operating domain, but the user must respond to a takeover request. Levels 4 and 5 assign fallback differently and are not simply upgrades activated by confidence or branding.

The operating domain matters

Capability may be restricted by road type, mapped area, speed, weather, traffic, driver state and vehicle condition. A function available overseas may not be approved, enabled or identical in Australia.

What is changing

More vehicles combine lane centring, adaptive cruise, driver monitoring, automated lane changes, parking functions and connected software. New manufacturers are accelerating competition and feature availability, but names and screen design do not establish safe capability.

What drivers should do

Use the manual for the exact Australian-market vehicle, recognise whether you or the system performs the driving task, and remain ready for the responsibility that applies. Treat software updates as changes requiring renewed familiarisation.
