What is phantom braking?
“Phantom braking” is an informal term for unexpected deceleration or braking when the driver cannot identify a hazard that appears to justify it.
The event may involve automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning or adaptive cruise control. These functions are not identical, so the first diagnostic question is which system was active and exactly what the vehicle did.
Why can it happen?
ADAS works from sensor measurements and software interpretation, not human understanding of the whole scene. A camera or radar may briefly classify an object or movement as a collision risk even when the driver can see that the path is safe.
Possible triggers include:
- a vehicle crossing or turning ahead
- a car close to the edge of a bend
- overhead signs, shadows or roadside objects
- crests, dips, narrow lanes or temporary roadworks
- metal plates, barriers or unusual roadside structures
- heavy rain, glare, fog or poor lane markings
- a dirty, obstructed, damaged or misaligned sensor
One event does not reveal the cause. Repeated events need evidence-based diagnosis rather than a guess based on the location alone.
What should you do in the moment?
Keep control of the vehicle and respond to the actual traffic situation.
- Hold the steering wheel securely and look where you need the vehicle to go.
- Check the traffic ahead and behind.
- Use the accelerator or brake as appropriate for your vehicle and the immediate risk.
- Cancel cruise control if it is active and you can do so safely.
- Move to a safe place before exploring menus, photographing warnings or making notes.

What should you record afterwards?
Useful details can turn an intermittent complaint into a diagnosable event. Record, when safely parked:
- date, time and approximate location
- speed and whether cruise control was active
- road shape, lane markings, traffic and weather
- the warning message, icon or sound
- whether the vehicle warned, reduced throttle or applied the brakes
- whether the event has happened before
- recent windscreen, bumper, wheel-alignment, suspension or collision work
Dashcam footage may also help, provided it is captured and handled safely.
Basic checks you can make
With the vehicle safely parked, inspect the sensor viewing areas described in the owner’s manual. Common locations include the windscreen near the interior mirror, the grille, bumper covers and vehicle emblems.
Remove ordinary dirt, insects, snow or loose obstructions using the manufacturer’s cleaning advice. Do not polish, paint, cover or mechanically adjust a sensor area in an attempt to fix the problem.
Also check for relevant vehicle recalls or manufacturer campaigns using the vehicle identification number, not just the model name.
When should the vehicle be inspected?
Arrange a competent inspection if unexpected braking repeats, is severe, begins after repair work, occurs with warning lights, or is accompanied by other ADAS faults.
A proper diagnostic process may include confirming the complaint, checking technical information, scanning all relevant systems, inspecting sensor mounting and surrounding components, checking software status, reviewing alignment or calibration requirements, and completing the specified verification procedure.
Simply clearing fault codes is not a diagnosis. A system can also have an alignment or environmental problem without storing a code that neatly identifies the cause.

Key point
Unexpected braking should neither be dismissed as “just technology” nor treated as proof that every AEB system is unsafe. Stay in control, document the event and have repeated or serious behaviour investigated systematically.
