What does rear cross-traffic alert do?
Rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA) warns of traffic approaching from either side while the vehicle is reversing. It is particularly useful when parked beside larger vehicles or obstacles that block the driver’s view.
Most systems use radar sensors behind the rear bumper, often shared with blind-spot monitoring. Some vehicles add rear automatic braking, but a warning-only RCTA system will not stop the vehicle.
What might it detect?
Depending on the vehicle, the system may respond to cars, motorcycles, cyclists or pedestrians moving across the reversing path. Detection distance, target types and operating speed vary, so consult the owner’s manual.
A warning may appear in a mirror, camera display or instrument panel, usually with a sound indicating the side of approach.
Important limitations
RCTA cannot see through every obstruction or cover every angle. It may miss:
- traffic approaching very quickly
- a small or slow-moving road user
- an object outside the sensor field
- traffic on an angled or curved path
- a target when the bumper is obstructed, damaged or heavily contaminated
Towbars, trailers, bicycle racks, bumper repairs and accessories may change operation or cause the system to be disabled.
Using it safely
Reverse slowly and continue checking mirrors, the reversing camera and over your shoulders. If an alert occurs, stop and identify the hazard before continuing. Do not assume silence means the path is clear.
Where rear automatic braking is fitted, keep control of the brake pedal. The feature may not respond to every target and can sometimes react to an object the driver has already judged.
After rear bumper work
Radar position and the material in front of it can affect detection. After impact, repair, paintwork or accessory installation, follow the current manufacturer procedure for inspection, aiming or calibration. Do not assume a visually tidy bumper proves correct sensor alignment.

RCTA provides an extra view into a difficult reversing situation, but it complements—not replaces—the driver’s observation and low-speed control.
