On many modern vehicles, the windscreen is part of the ADAS installation rather than just a piece of glass. A forward-facing camera may be mounted to a bracket on the glass and look through a carefully defined viewing area.
Replacing the windscreen can change the camera’s position or optical path. The vehicle manufacturer’s service information determines whether the camera must be inspected, initialised, calibrated or otherwise verified after the work.
Which systems may be affected?
A windscreen-mounted camera may support several functions, including:

The exact functions vary by vehicle. A dashboard light going out does not, by itself, prove that every camera-supported function is correctly aimed and operating as intended.
Why the replacement glass matters
The replacement must be suitable for the vehicle and its fitted equipment. Relevant details can include the camera viewing area, optical quality, tint, coatings, heating elements, antennae and the accuracy of the mounting bracket.
Original-equipment-branded glass is not the only possible suitable option, and non-original branding does not automatically mean the glass is unsafe. What matters is that the selected part meets the applicable specification and that the complete replacement and calibration process follows current manufacturer information.
When is calibration required?
There is no reliable universal rule based only on the camera’s appearance or the vehicle badge. Depending on the model, the procedure may involve:
- a static calibration using targets in a controlled workshop
- a dynamic calibration performed on the road under specified conditions
- both static and dynamic procedures
- an inspection, initialisation or verification process instead
The correct method and prerequisites must come from the current service information for that vehicle. Tyre pressures, ride height, wheel alignment, fuel or load level, battery support, lighting and floor conditions may all form part of the procedure.
What should happen after replacement?
A sound process should identify the vehicle’s ADAS equipment before work begins, protect and correctly refit the camera and bracket, complete any required scan or calibration, and verify the result.
Australian industry guidance also supports keeping evidence of the work. Depending on the vehicle and repair, this may include pre-scan and post-scan reports, calibration results, measurements, fault-code records and the technician’s final verification.
What to ask the repairer
Before approving a windscreen replacement, ask:
- Does my vehicle have a camera or other sensor associated with the windscreen?
- Is the proposed glass correct for this exact vehicle and equipment level?
- What does the manufacturer require after replacement?
- Will calibration be completed in-house or by a specialist?
- What report or certificate will I receive?
- Are calibration and related diagnostic work included in the quote?
If the job is part of an insurance claim, confirm how the insurer and repairer will handle the complete procedure before the glass is fitted.
If the camera area is chipped or cracked
Do not assume damage in the camera’s field of view is merely cosmetic. Keep the area clean, avoid placing stickers or accessories near it and arrange an assessment by a competent repairer.
Continue to drive according to the road and traffic conditions, and do not rely on a driver-assistance feature whose view may be impaired. Follow any warning shown by the vehicle and consult the owner’s manual.
