ADAS technician training and competency

The knowledge, practical skills and continuing development technicians need for responsible ADAS diagnosis and calibration.

Competency is broader than a certificate

A course certificate records participation or assessment at a point in time. Competency also requires underpinning knowledge, supervised practice, suitable equipment, access to current information and evidence that the technician can complete the actual procedure safely.

Core capability areas

  • recognising systems and sensor locations
  • reading wiring diagrams, service information and repair triggers
  • full-vehicle scanning and DTC diagnosis
  • vehicle geometry, alignment and preparation
  • static and dynamic calibration setup
  • programming, coding and initialisation boundaries
  • safe road testing and workshop risk control
  • verification, documentation and customer communication

Build an Australian pathway

Start from the technician’s existing automotive trade skills, then combine relevant TAFE or recognised training, manufacturer courses, equipment-specific instruction and supervised workplace tasks. Confirm current entry requirements and recognition directly with the provider; the training landscape changes.

Workshops should maintain a competency matrix showing which people are authorised for each system, tool and procedure. Referral remains a professional skill when a task falls outside that coverage.

Continue learning

Review technical bulletins, new model procedures, software changes, equipment updates and unsuccessful jobs. Reassess skills when the workshop expands its vehicle or sensor coverage.

Responsible ADAS work depends on demonstrated, current capability—not confidence alone or a single generic course.
