Setting up an ADAS calibration station

How to assess space, floor, lighting, equipment, workflow and quality controls for repeatable static calibration work.

Start with intended vehicle coverage

Do not buy a target frame and then try to make the building fit it. Define the makes, models, sensors and procedures the workshop intends to support. Equipment coverage, target clearances and floor tolerances determine the facility requirements.

Survey the complete working area

Measure the floor where the vehicle, targets and measuring equipment will stand—not just the wheel contact patches. Record level and flatness using a suitable method and compare the results with each procedure and equipment specification.

Check usable length, width, height, door clearance and the space needed to establish centreline or thrust line. Allow safe movement without bumping a target or crossing cables.

Control the environment

Camera procedures may specify lighting intensity, target illumination, background, glare or sunlight control. Radar procedures may require clearance from metallic objects or reflective structures.

Use controllable lighting and restrict through-traffic. Keep grinding, welding, painting and dust-producing work away from the bay. Temperature, ventilation and battery-support safety must also suit the equipment and vehicle procedure.

Select and manage equipment

Coverage claims must be verified against the exact procedures you plan to perform. Maintain:

  • correct, undamaged targets and reflectors
  • measuring and alignment equipment with traceable checks
  • supported diagnostic hardware and current software
  • stable stands, fixtures and battery support
  • protected target storage
  • access to current manufacturer service information

Aftermarket equipment can be suitable if it can reproduce the required procedure and tolerances. A “universal” label alone is not evidence.

Standardise without taking shortcuts

Bay markings, checklists and stored equipment settings can reduce setup time, but they must not replace vehicle-specific measurements. Confirm the datum, distances and prerequisites on every job.

Use a controlled process for equipment inspection, software updates, target damage, staff competency and failed calibrations. Prevent anyone moving the vehicle or rig once measurements begin.

Decide when to refer work

Document the limits of the bay, equipment and technician coverage. Refer a vehicle when the required space, target, software, information or environmental conditions cannot be achieved. A transparent referral is safer than an improvised calibration.
