Static vs dynamic ADAS calibration

How static, dynamic and combined calibration methods differ, what each requires and why the technician does not choose by convenience.

The method is specified, not selected

Static and dynamic describe how a sensor learns its required reference. The manufacturer procedure determines whether a vehicle needs one method, both methods or another form of aiming or verification.

Technicians must not substitute a dynamic drive because targets are unavailable, or a static routine because road conditions are inconvenient.

Static calibration

The vehicle remains stationary while a camera, radar or other sensor observes specified targets or reflectors. The procedure may define:

  • floor level and working area
  • lighting, background and clearance
  • vehicle load, tyre pressure and ride height
  • target type, position, height and orientation
  • vehicle centreline or thrust-line datum
  • scan-tool routine and completion checks

Static work offers a controllable environment, but only when measurements and prerequisites remain within tolerance.

Dynamic calibration

The vehicle is driven while the system learns from lane markings, traffic or roadside features. Requirements may include a speed range, journey duration, road type, lane quality, weather and traffic conditions.

Dynamic does not mean “take it for a drive until the message disappears”. Plan a legal route, use a second technician where the diagnostic equipment requires attention, and stop if safe conditions cannot be maintained.

Combined procedures

Some vehicles require a static stage followed by dynamic learning or verification. Others use different methods for different sensors. Complete every specified stage in the stated order.

A completed routine is not the whole job

Before calibration, correct mounting, damage, alignment and relevant DTCs. Afterwards, perform the specified scan, status check and functional verification. Record actual conditions and results, including an incomplete or failed attempt.

Key point

Static uses a controlled reference; dynamic uses the road environment. Neither is inherently better or interchangeable—the current vehicle procedure decides.
