Begin with the exact vehicle procedure
Radar calibration is not one universal target-and-scan routine. Sensor position, frequency, mounting, target type, measurements, software functions and calibration method vary between makes, models and systems.
Before quoting or beginning work, identify the vehicle accurately and obtain current manufacturer service information. Confirm which radar is fitted, why the procedure has been triggered, its prerequisites and the required method of verification.
Identify all affected work
Calibration or an alignment check may be required after work such as:
- radar removal, replacement or bracket disturbance
- bumper, grille, emblem or body repair near the sensor
- collision or impact damage
- structural repair
- steering, suspension, ride-height or wheel-alignment work
- specified software updates or control-unit replacement
- a relevant fault or performance complaint

Inspect before calibrating
A calibration routine should not be used to hide a physical defect. Inspect the sensor, bracket, fasteners, connector and the radar-transparent surface in front of it.
Check for impact damage, distortion, contamination, corrosion, incorrect assembly, excessive paint or filler, unsuitable accessories and prior repairs. Confirm that part numbers and mounting components are correct where replacement work has occurred.
If the sensor cannot be mounted in its specified position, repair the underlying cause before attempting calibration.
Prepare the whole vehicle
Radar aim is related to vehicle geometry, not just the sensor face. Follow the listed prerequisites, which may include:
- correct tyre size, condition and pressure
- specified ride height and vehicle load
- wheel alignment or thrust-line checks
- centred steering and steering-angle status
- clean sensor surfaces
- correct battery support
- no unrelated faults that prevent the procedure
- specified fuel level, fluid levels or luggage condition
Record the checks rather than relying on memory.
Control the calibration environment
For static calibration, use the floor, lighting, clearances, target and measurement method specified by the manufacturer. Australian industry guidance recommends a controlled indoor environment for static work, with a level solid floor, controlled lighting and freedom from obstructions or objects that may interfere with the setup.
Establish the vehicle centreline or other required datum accurately. Position the approved reflector or target at the specified distance, height and angle. Small setup errors can undermine an otherwise successful-looking procedure.
For dynamic calibration, plan a lawful route that meets the required speed, lane, traffic, road and weather conditions. Do not improvise a road test that cannot meet the stated procedure.
Use suitable equipment and information
The diagnostic platform must support the function on the exact vehicle, and its software and data must be current. Targets, reflectors, alignment rigs and measurement tools must be appropriate, undamaged and maintained.
Aftermarket equipment can be suitable when it provides validated coverage and can meet the manufacturer procedure. “Universal” does not mean every tool, target or setup is valid for every vehicle.
Treat completion as one piece of evidence
A scan-tool message saying the routine completed is important, but it is not the entire quality check. Complete the manufacturer’s specified post-calibration steps, which may include:
- clearing and rechecking relevant fault codes
- a post-repair scan
- checking alignment values or learned offsets
- a dynamic verification or road test
- confirming warning lamps and system status
- checking related cameras, steering or braking systems
Do not create unsafe demonstrations to force an emergency intervention. Verification must follow the approved procedure.
Document the job
Retain enough information to show what was done and why. A useful record can include:
- vehicle identification and fitted system
- repair or event that triggered the check
- service-information source and procedure used
- pre-scan and post-scan reports
- vehicle preparation and alignment results
- equipment, software and targets used
- measurements and setup photographs where appropriate
- calibration outcome and final verification
- technician, date and location
Provide the customer or repairer with the relevant result, and clearly document any unresolved fault or work outside the agreed scope.
