When is ADAS calibration required?

A workshop decision process for identifying calibration requirements after repairs, replacement, adjustment or damage.

There is no universal trigger list

Calibration requirements are determined by the current manufacturer procedure for the exact vehicle, sensor and repair operation. The same job may require calibration on one model, an inspection or initialisation on another, and no sensor procedure on a third.

Do not rely only on a warning lamp, scan-tool menu, generic database or prior experience with a similar vehicle.

Events that should prompt a procedure check

  • windscreen removal or replacement near a camera
  • camera, radar, LiDAR or ultrasonic sensor removal or replacement
  • disturbance or replacement of a sensor bracket
  • bumper, grille, emblem, mirror or body repair around a sensor
  • collision or structural repair
  • wheel alignment, steering, suspension or ride-height work
  • tyre or wheel-size changes
  • control-unit replacement, programming or specified software work
  • a relevant DTC, warning or performance complaint

These are prompts to check—not proof that calibration is always required.

Identify the vehicle and systems first

Confirm the VIN, build date, variant and fitted ADAS equipment. Inspect sensor locations and review the full repair plan. One repair may affect several functions because a single camera or radar can supply multiple control systems.

Search service information by both the repair operation and the sensor system. Calibration requirements may appear in removal-and-installation instructions, body repair manuals, wheel-alignment procedures, glass information or technical bulletins.

Separate four possible outcomes

The manufacturer may require:

  1. physical inspection or measurement
  2. reset, coding or initialisation
  3. static, dynamic or combined calibration
  4. functional verification or road test

These tasks are not interchangeable. Clearing a code does not calibrate a sensor, and a successful calibration routine does not repair a bent bracket.

Build the requirement into the repair plan

Decide who will complete each task before work begins. If calibration is subcontracted, document the handover, prerequisites, transport method and responsibility for unresolved faults.

Tell the customer or insurer when the final requirement cannot be confirmed until dismantling, measurement or diagnosis exposes the condition of the vehicle.

Ask “What does the current procedure require after this exact operation?” rather than “Do these vehicles normally need calibration?”
