Camera and LiDAR calibration fundamentals

Different sensors, different measurements

Cameras interpret light, contrast, shapes and markings. LiDAR measures reflected laser light to estimate distance and create spatial information. Both must relate their observations accurately to the vehicle coordinate system, but their targets, tolerances and procedures are not interchangeable.

Inspect before calibrating

Confirm the correct sensor, bracket, windscreen, fascia or cover is fitted. Check mounting, damage, contamination, connectors and the specified viewing area. Correct physical defects before asking software to learn an offset.

For cameras, inspect glass optical quality, bracket position and the view through the windscreen. For LiDAR, inspect the housing, protective surface and surrounding trim; coatings, paint, film or damage may affect transmission.

Prepare the complete vehicle

Follow the exact prerequisites for tyres, pressures, ride height, load, fuel, alignment, steering position, battery support, DTC status and temperature. Do not copy measurements or target positions from another model.

The specified procedure may be static, dynamic or combined. Use the correct target or reflector, establish the required datum and remain within every stated tolerance.

Verification and records

A completed scan-tool routine is one result. Finish the specified post-scan, learned-value check and functional verification. Do not deliberately provoke AEB or another emergency intervention.

Record the service-information source, equipment, setup measurements, prerequisites, outcome and unresolved limitations.
