Sensors depend on vehicle geometry
Forward sensors are mounted to the body, while the vehicle travels according to its wheels, suspension and steering. Ride height, thrust angle, steering position and rolling circumference can therefore affect the reference used by ADAS functions.
This relationship does not mean every tyre replacement or wheel alignment automatically requires sensor calibration.
Begin with the mechanical condition
Confirm approved tyre sizes, matching rolling circumference, pressure, wear, wheel condition, ride height and suspension integrity. Measure alignment using suitable equipment and current specifications. Correct damage, wear and geometry before calibration.
Modified vehicles require particular care. A lift, lowering kit, wheel offset, non-standard tyre diameter, load accessory or adjustable suspension may place the vehicle outside the assumptions or tolerances in the manufacturer procedure.
Separate the possible tasks
After mechanical work, the procedure may require one or more of:
- wheel alignment
- steering-angle or ride-height sensor reset or calibration
- camera, radar or other sensor calibration
- programming or configuration for an approved modification
- scan and functional verification
These operations are related but not interchangeable. Centring a steering wheel does not calibrate a camera; calibrating radar does not correct thrust angle.
When the vehicle is outside specification
Do not force a calibration to pass or invent target offsets. Record the measurements, identify the modification and explain that reliable ADAS operation cannot be confirmed if specified prerequisites cannot be met. Seek approved accessory or modifier information where available.
